Chaos Reading Order: What Happens When Fans Binge My Backlist Backwards

Okay, confession time. I've written twenty-something books, and until last month I had never actually sat down and read them back to back. You know how it goes — you finish a manuscript, you're so sick of those characters that you'd rather reorganize your sock drawer than reread chapter one. But my book club readers kept asking the same question at signings: "Does it matter where I start?"

So I did what any reasonable romance novelist would do. I poured a glass of pinot, cancelled my weekend, and read my entire backlist twice. Once in publication order. Once in what I've officially named the Emotional Damage Order — the sequence that hits hardest, regardless of when the books came out.

Here's what happened.

Round One: Publication Order (The Respectable Choice)

Reading in publication order is like watching a kid grow up in fast-forward. You can literally see my craft evolve — the early books are scrappier, the banter tries a little too hard, and there's a suspicious number of rain-soaked kisses. (In my defense: rain is free atmosphere.)

But there's something sweet about it. The cameos land the way I intended. When a character from book three strolls into book nine, publication-order readers get that little hey, I know you! jolt. It's the reading equivalent of running into your third-grade teacher at the grocery store — surprising, but warm.

Verdict: Great for completists and anyone who likes watching a writer find her footing. Also great if you want to witness the exact book where I discovered em dashes. Sorry about that, by the way.

Round Two: The Emotional Damage Order (My Personal Favorite)

This is where it gets fun. I rearranged everything — standalone series, connected books, the whole messy universe — into the sequence that maximizes feels. Think of it like a DJ set: you don't play the songs in the order they were recorded, you play them in the order that wrecks people.

The rules I followed:

  1. Start with a hook, not a slow burn. New readers need to fall in love fast, so I opened with the small-town series. Low stakes, high charm, one grumpy handyman who purrs like a lawnmower.
  2. Save the second-chance ex for the middle. By then readers are invested enough in the world that the ache hits different.
  3. End on the billionaire. He's the most polarizing hero I've written, and ending there means readers either slam the book shut forever or immediately join the fan group to yell at me. Both are wins.

Verdict: 10/10, would emotionally compromise readers again. If you've ever finished one of my books and stared at the ceiling at 2 a.m. whispering "just one more chapter," this is the order for you.

Your Printable Reading Order Guide

I've put together a free, printable one-pager with both sequences, plus little icons marking which books are spoiler-safe entry points (look for the heart) and which ones should not be your first Mackenzie McKade experience unless you enjoy confusion (look for the lightning bolt). Print it, fold it into your current read, and use it as a bookmark. That's literally what I made it for.

A few spoiler-safe notes if you're picking a starting point this week:

Now It's Your Turn

Here's the part I love most: no two readers enter my world the same way. Some of you started with a freebie I gave away during a promo in 2019. Some of you picked up a paperback at an airport in Dallas because your flight was delayed and the cover was pretty. (It was pretty. I hired well.)

So tell me in the comments — what was YOUR entry point? Publication order from day one? Chaos reading? Did you start with the emotional damage order by pure accident and never look back? I read every comment, and yes, I absolutely screenshot the nice ones and send them to my editor like a proud mom.

Next month, the book club is voting on which book we do a group reread of. The poll is live now, and there's a certain brooding hero who's currently winning by a landslide. He would hate that. Which is exactly why I'm voting for him.

Happy reading, lovelies — and remember, there's no wrong order. Only wrong amounts of tissues.
